Family Counseling

It’s said you’re the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. It has been proven again and again the immense impact people close to you have on your life. In particular, how family impacts your life.

For better or for worse, we spend most of our day around our family. They are often the first relationships we form- with grandparents, kids, siblings, parents or a romantic relationship. We learn how to communicate, function and love with these people. But dysfunction happens in all families. It is a spectrum, one that encapsulates everyone. Both the beauty and chaos of a family occurs no matter the structure- biological, adopted, foster or a step family, it doesn’t matter. They affect you and you affect them, in a constant cycle of influence, love and occasionally, hurt.

No family is perfect, but the counselors at Stoughton Counseling want to make sure the time you spend with your family is a fruitful one full of love and good times. These are the people you come home to, and although we are all far from perfect- happy and healthy relationships within the home can exist. Stoughton Counseling wants to help you get there.

What is Family Counseling?

Problems can exist in the home for all sorts of reasons, many of them completely out of your control. Stoughton Counseling is equipped to walk with your family through whatever turmoil is going on. Exactly how a counseling session is structured largely depends on the family’s goals and situation. Sometimes we will meet with each individual separately, doing group therapy less often. Or, we will meet with the entire family all at once. Our counselors will work with you to find a good fit for your family.

Our therapists work to create a nonjudgemental and supportive space. We want to hear all the little, minor things as well as the bigger issues. Our goal is to help rebuild and strengthen your family so you can then begin problem solving and a happier family life than before. Some methods we use include:

  • Strengthen communication

  • Work through individual concerns (e.g. mental illness, personal stress, fears, etc.)

  • Identify roles

  • Build on strengths

  • Learn to handle conflict in a healthy manner

No family chooses conflict. We all want our homes to be safe and full of love. If you feel your family life spinning out of control or developing less than ideal habits, our family therapists can help get you back on track.

Could your family benefit from Family Counseling?

All families fight and stress exists in all households to an extent. It doesn’t make them less caring or “good”. But how do you know if your family could benefit from family counseling in Stoughton? You may benefit from talking to one of our family therapists if your family is going through:

  • The loss of a loved one

  • A career loss or shift

  • Divorce

  • Diagnosis of a chronic illness

  • Empty nest

  • Welcoming a new member

  • Substance abuse

  • Academic problems

  • Financial strain

  • Mental health disorder

  • Overworked members

These are just some of the ones we see more frequently, but family therapy can be beneficial in almost every scenario. You and your family deserve the best. Sometimes it can feel impossible to have a calm, rested home. But it is! There’s nothing wrong with a family hitting a rough patch, and sometimes it can help to talk through the issues and find new strategies. That’s where Stoughton Counseling can help. At the end of the day, it’s your family and you will know best. We are here to help guide and encourage.

Family life is often the key to a healthy and happy mental life. Yours can cultivate that peace too.
